Anuran larvae as prey and hosts of invertebrates in neotropical aquatic habitats RChHN
Gambale,Priscilla Guedes; Batista,Vinícius Guerra; Oda,Fabrício Hiroiuki; Campos,Renata Mayara; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato; Bastos,Rogério Pereira.
BACKGROUND: Biotic processes, such as predation and parasitism events, are crucial for answering questions in ecology and evolution. Here, we report predation and ectoparasitism events of invertebrates upon tadpoles in aquatic habitats of southern Brazil. FINDINGS: Four lentic water bodies were sampled twice a month (December 2012 to March 2013). Those water bodies were located in the Diamante do Norte County, State of Paraná, southern Brazil. The tadpoles, Dendropsophus aff. minutus, Hypsiboas raniceps, Scinax fuscovarius, Physalaemus cuvieri and Elachistocleis bicolor were observed being predated by six different invertebrate predators. However, Leptodactylus fuscus and Pseudis sp. were also recorded on the same water bodies and were not observed being...

Assimilation efficiency in Bufo spinulosus tadpoles (Anura: Bufonidae): effects of temperature, diet quality and geographic origin RChHN
BENAVIDES,A. GONZALO; VELOSO,ALBERTO; JIMÉNEZ,PAULINA; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A..
The assimilation efficiency of Bufo spinulosus tadpoles from four localities in Chile was evaluated for two different temperatures (15 and 25 ºC) and two different diets (low nutritional quality diet (LQD): 22.28 mg g N-1; high nutritional quality diet (HQD): 47.53 mg g N-1) using ash as a marker of digestion. Results showed that geographic origin did not affect assimilation efficiency, while the relationship observed between temperature and diet quality was significant. Assimilation efficiency was greater for the HQD when tadpoles were maintained at 15 °C, instead significant differences were not found between diets for tadpoles maintained at 25 °C. Our results suggest that the effect of temperature on digestive processes is more relevant than its effect...

Composition and diversity of anurans in the largest conservation unit in Pampa biome, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bolzan,Ana Maria Rigon; Saccol,Suélen Alves; Santos,Tiago Gomes dos.
Grassy biomes occupy about 20% of the earth's surface, and are characteristic of northern Australia, Africa and South America, being biodiversity in these environments poorly understood. The Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) do Ibirapuitã includes areas with the best-preserved grassland areas in the Pampa biome in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. This study aimed to determine anuran species richness, abundance, constancy of occurrence, and reproductive modes, and to compare the taxonomic composition in the APA with other localities within the grassland areas of the southernmost of South America. We collected frogs from September to November 2012 and in November 2013 by sampling of reproductive sites. We also examined specimens deposited in herpetological...

The Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758 copepodids experimental contamination on the Rana catesbeiana Shaw, 1802 ladpoles was analized. Sixty percent (12) of infested tadpoles was found parasitized. High mortality range, lower appetence, equilibrium loss and apathy were observed. The parasites showed the preference for the mouth and cloaca: in 72 hours lhe egg saes had already developed.

Micronuclei induction in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles by the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin Genet. Mol. Biol.
Campana,Marcela Alejandra; Panzeri,Ana María; Moreno,Víctor Jorge; Dulout,Fernando Noel.
Pyrethroid lambda-cyhalothrin genotoxicity was evaluated using the micronucleus test in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles. The effects of concentration and exposure time on the micronuclei frequency were studied in blood smears obtained from tadpoles exposed to four concentrations (0.02, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mg/L) of the compound for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and 8, 15, 20 and 30 days. As a positive control, tadpoles were exposed to cyclophosphamide (5 mg/L). The micronucleated cell frequency was expressed per 1,000 cells. R. catesbeiana tadpoles exposed to increasing concentrations of lambda-cyhalothrin showed an increase in the micronuclei frequency in peripheral blood. Tadpoles exposed to cyclophosphamide (CP) also showed a significant increase in micronucleated...

Otophryne (Anura: Microhylidae) from the highlands of Guyana: redescriptions, vocalisations, tadpoles and new distributions Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
MacCulloch,Ross D.; Lathrop,Amy; Minter,Leslie R.; Khan,Samir Z..
Recent collections are used to expand existing descriptions of adults of Otophryne robusta and O. steyermarki. The calls of O. pyburni and O. robusta are compared. Tadpoles of O. robusta and O. steyermarki are described. Characters for distinguishing among adults and tadpoles of these two species and O. pyburni are provided. Otophryne is a Guiana shield endemic; O. pyburni is widespread at lower elevations, whereas O. robusta and O. steyermarki occur in southeastern Venezuela and western Guyana, the former at moderate elevations and the latter at higher elevations.

Tadpoles of the High-Andean Hyloxalus subpunctatus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) with description of larval variation and species distinction by larval morphology Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Anganoy-Criollo,Marvin.
This study redescribes the tadpoles of Hyloxalus subpunctatus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) based on larvae from the type locality and over most of its geographic range, including all stages of ontogenetic development. I describe tadpoles in the three developmental phases: (1) back-riding tadpoles, (2) free-swimming tadpoles, (3) froglets or individuals in metamorphosis. The larval morphology showed at least two types of variation: ontogenetic variation and variation within each developmental phase. In back-riding tadpoles, the variation in labial tooth rows suggests a pattern of the labial tooth row formation. In free-swimming tadpoles there is variation in the disposition of marginal papillae, i.e., in the number of rows on the margin of the lips, but this...
